Organisation Goal

An organisation goal is a goal the company has set itself, not a person: reduce rejection to 2 percent, dispatch 95 percent of orders on time. You record it here for the year, and split it between the populations that have to deliver it.

At the start of the appraisal year, after the cycle exists

What it is for

A client with a management committee usually has a list of company goals that the appraisal is supposed to serve, and the question in the room is always the same: who owns this one, and how much of it sits with the factory rather than with sales. This screen records that conversation.

A goal has an owner, a weight, a target and a date range. Under it, one line per population that carries part of it, with each population's share. Production carries 70 percent of the rejection goal, Quality the other 30.

This is a record of intent and a place to report progress against it. It is a separate screen from the appraisal form for a good reason: a company goal lives for the year and belongs to the business, while a goal sheet belongs to one man for one half.

How to configure it

  1. Create the Evaluation Cycle for the year first. A company goal is recorded against a round.
  2. Open the screen and record one goal per line item on the management committee's list.
  3. Name the owner, the perspective and the weight. Make the year's weights total 100.
  4. Set the target, the unit and the date range.
  5. Add a Shared With line per population that carries part of it, with each share. Make the shares total 100.
  6. Save, and come back through the year to update the actual and the status.

Scenarios

"The rejection goal is mostly production but quality owns the inspection end of it"

One goal, two Shared With lines. Production at 70 and Quality at 30, each with its own figure. One owner still signs for the goal as a whole.

"The committee wants to see which goals are slipping"

Keep the actual and the status current. At Risk and Missed are there to be used, and a goal left on Active all year tells nobody anything.

What it is connected to

  • Evaluation Cycle is the round a goal is recorded against.
  • Performance Target Entity is what a goal is shared between.
  • Evaluation Metric is where the same subject becomes something an individual can be scored on. A company goal and a measure are not the same thing and are not linked automatically.

If something looks wrong

  • "The shares do not look right" - they are meant to total 100 across the Shared With lines. Nothing recalculates them for you.
  • "We cannot find the goal on an employee's appraisal" - a company goal is not pushed onto a sheet by itself. The corresponding Evaluation Metric has to be on the Evaluation Template for anybody to be scored on it.
