Wage Type Group
A wage type group is a folder for wage types. At a client with sixty wage types it is the difference between a list you can work in and a list you scroll.
What it is for
Every wage type has to name a group, so the group list has to exist first. The group is a grouping only: no calculation reads it, nothing branches on it, and moving a wage type from one group to another changes nobody's pay. It exists so that a consultant picking a wage type, and a manager reading a long payroll register, can both find what they are after.
Keep the list short. Four or five groups covering earnings, benefits, statutory deductions, loan recoveries and one for the ad hoc lines is enough at a five hundred person company. If you are tempted to create a group per allowance, you want a Wage Type Category instead.
Every field, in plain words
Basic Data
| Field | What it means | What to put in it | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wage Type Group | The short code you will pick on each wage type | EARN, DEDUCT, STAT, LOAN | Required |
| Name | The group as it should read in a list | Earnings, Statutory Deductions | Required |
| Block | Stops the group being picked on a new wage type | Leave it clear | Tick it to retire a group you no longer use |
How to configure it
- Create a group for earnings. Code
EARN, name Earnings. - Create one for the statutory lines, one for loan recoveries and one for everything else. Four groups at most to begin with.
- Save, and go on to Wage Type.
Scenarios
"We want the payslip to show earnings first, then deductions"
The group is not what orders a payslip. The order comes from the Sort number on each Wage Type. Use the group to keep the wage type list tidy and set the Sort numbers to control what the man actually sees.
What it is connected to
- Must exist before Wage Type, because the group is a required field there.
- Nothing else reads it. A group can be renamed at any time without affecting a payroll that has already run.
If something looks wrong
- "I cannot save a wage type, it wants a group" - no group exists yet, or the one you want is blocked. Create or unblock it here.
