Cost Key

A cost key is a label for a kind of cost. It is a short list of a code and a name, kept for the manufacturing and costing side of the product rather than for HR.

What it is for

The screen is a plain code list. You enter a code, a name, and if the client prints in another language, the name in that language.

It belongs to the manufacturing side of the shared product. An HR-only installation never opens it.

Note that the Cost Key field on the Cost Object screen is picked from a fixed set of four values built into that screen, not from this list. The two are not joined, which surprises people who assume they are.

How to configure it

  1. Open Cost Key, enter a code and a name, and save.
  2. Skip the screen entirely on an HR-only implementation.

Scenarios

The client is HR only and asks what this screen is for

Nothing in their installation. It is part of the shared product's manufacturing costing and can be left empty.

What it is connected to

  • Read by the costing side of the shared product.
  • Not read by Cost Object, whose own Cost Key field comes from a fixed list of four values.

If something looks wrong

  • "The cost key I created does not appear on the Cost Object screen" - it would not. That field has its own fixed list of four values and does not read this screen.
