Education
Education is the list of qualifications people actually hold: BSc Mechanical Engineering, B Com, MBA Finance, DAE Electrical. The tier it sits at is a separate list on Education Level. This one is the degree.
What it is for
If the qualification is typed freely on each employee record you end up with eleven spellings of BSc Mechanical Engineering and no way to answer how many mechanical engineers work here. This list fixes the spelling once.
Keep it to the qualifications your client's workforce actually holds. A list copied from a university prospectus is thousands of entries, and the ones nobody holds slow down everyone who is typing. Start with what is on the existing employee files and add as you go.
Every field, in plain words
Education
| Field | What it means | What to put in it | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Education | The short code for the qualification. | BSC-MECH | Required. Must be unique. |
| Name | The qualification written out as it appears on the certificate. | BSc Mechanical Engineering | Required. Translations are kept per language. |
How to configure it
- Create the tiers on Education Level first.
- Take the existing employee files and list the distinct qualifications. In a 500 person manufacturer this is usually thirty to sixty entries, heavily weighted to matriculation and a handful of engineering degrees.
- Create one record per qualification. Write the name the way the certificate does, so nobody wonders whether
BS MechanicalandBSc Mechanical Engineeringare the same thing. - Save. Add new qualifications as HR meets them rather than trying to be exhaustive on day one.
Scenario
Two employees hold the same degree from different universities
One record here, used by both. The university is recorded separately as the Institution on each employee's education record, which is exactly why the two lists are separate.
What it is connected to
- Education Level holds the tiers these qualifications sit at.
- Employee Education records which qualification an employee holds, from where, and at which level.
- Institution holds the places that award them.
If something looks wrong
- "The same degree appears twice with different spellings" - two records were created. Keep one, move employees onto it, and let the other go unused.
- "It will not save, it says the education already exists" - the code is in use and must be unique.
