Skill Group
A skill group is a family of skills: Welding, Machine Operation, Electrical, Office Software. It keeps the skill list navigable once there are eighty skills in it, and lets a skills gap be described by family rather than skill by skill.
What it is for
Skills are the longest reference list in a manufacturing implementation, because the shop floor is specific. TIG welding and MIG welding are not the same skill, and neither is lathe operation and CNC operation. Eighty entries is normal.
The group is how that stays usable. It also changes the conversation with management: "we are short of welding skills" is actionable, "we are short of skill code W-114" is not.
Every field, in plain words
Skill Group
| Field | What it means | What to put in it | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skill Group | The short code for the family. | WELD | Required. Must be unique. |
| Name | The family written out. | Welding and Fabrication | Required. Translations are kept per language. |
| Block | Retires a group. | Leave clear. | Ticking it stops the group being offered on new skills. |
How to configure it
- Walk the plant with the production manager and name the families of work. That is the list, and it comes out of that walk faster than out of a meeting.
- Create one record each, for example
WELD/Welding and Fabrication,MACH/Machine Operation,ELEC/Electrical and Instrumentation,QC/Inspection and Testing,OFFICE/Office and Software. - Save, then create the skills on Skill and set the group on each.
Scenario
We need to know which shift is short of welders
Group every welding skill under one group. The shortage is then visible per group per shift, instead of needing somebody to know which eleven skill codes count as welding.
What it is connected to
- Nothing has to exist before this screen.
- Skill names a group on each skill.
- Employee Skill records which skills an employee has, at which rating.
If something looks wrong
- "The group list is empty on a skill" - no groups have been created, or all of them are blocked.
- "It will not save, it says the group already exists" - the code is in use and must be unique.
